In this study of contemporary Uzbeks, Professor Edward A. Ollworth provides a comprehensive and authoritative survey of important groups of Muslim populations who live within the boundaries of the Soviet Union. After Russians and Ukrainians, Uzbeks are the largest ethnic group in the Soviet Union, and the most influential Muslim community inhabiting a vast region of Central Asia. Although the author pays special attention to the periods of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union, he also refers to earlier periods of the history of the Uzbek people. The work carefully analyzed the relations of Uzbeks with their foreign rulers, the reaction of Uzbeks to Russification and modernization, as well as ethnic and religious problems of Uzbek society. Also included is the criticism of Soviet historiography and the main philosophical and ideological grounds that formed the basis for studying history in the Soviet Union.
