This five-volume edition is devoted to the results of the second expedition of Sir Mark Aurel Stein to Central Asia (1906-1908). M.A. Stein composed three large sections of his reports in 11 separate books (the first section is Ancient Khotan, vol. I-II, and the third section, Innermost Asia, Vol. I-IV.).
Serindia, respectively, the second section. The publication consists of the main text, illustrations to it and maps compiled on the results of the expedition. The term Serindia unites two historical and geographical regions of Asia - Seriku and India. Seri (Gr. Σῆρες, Lat. Sērēs), Ancient Greek, and after them the Latin authors called the inhabitants of the region, which corresponds to the northwestern part of modern China. Thus, under Serindia, one can understand the term "Eastern Turkestan", more widely used in Russian studies, which in the territorial sense should be understood as modern Xinjiang.
Volume 1 contains materials on the ruins of ancient settlements, temples, stupas and artifacts found in the region along the southern route of the expedition from northwestern India (the ancient southern branch of the Silk Road), running through the oases of Khotan, Domoko, Niya, Endere, Cherchen, Charlik, district Lob-Nor Lake (ancient Kroraina and Loulan) and the Miran Oasis.
Volume 2 is devoted to the exploration of the cave complex in Dunhuang, known in the literature as "Caves of a Thousand Buddhas".
Volume 3 includes materials on the study of antiquities discovered by the expedition in various parts of western Gansu, and in the region of the northern part of the basin of the river. Tarim (the ancient northern branch of the Silk Road): Hami, Turfan, Kara-Shar, Kucha, Maral-bashi. And also, the southern oases near Khotan and Kashgar.
Volume 4 is an illustration of a total of 175. Here is a piece of the huge material collected by Stein's expedition, among which are figurines, ceramics, fragments of frescoes, friezes, various cult objects from terracotta, coins, household items, fabric samples, bone and wooden products and much more. . And also, fragments of ancient manuscripts, which are, perhaps, the most valuable part of the Stein collection. These are monuments of Indian script written in brahmi and kharoshtha, found in the most diverse areas of East Turkestan.
Volume 5 is 94 maps compiled during the expedition, the index and total. Maps cover an extensive region of the basin of the river. Tarim and parts of Gansu Province.
