The book presents the archaic period of the history of Eretria, marked by the greatest political influence of this ancient Greek policy. Drawing on literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources, the author examines all the main components, which, in his opinion, led to the rise of the city. One of the key factors is the development of the city's fleet, which allowed the successful trade and colonization of the Levant and the Aegean. The strength of the Eretric Navy brought the city the status of thalassocracy in the period 506-490. BC, and the importance of its rowers, (etymologically, Eretria, possibly related to "rowing", ie, "City of oarsmen"), according to the author, probably led to the emergence of a democratic constitution.
