The book of Robert Irwin is devoted to the early period of Mameluke rule. The Mamluks sultanate was an important period in the development of Islam, during which industries developed and flourished, trade between Europe and Asia expanded, and the flow of scientific knowledge from the Arab world to Europe intensified, which was one of the components of the European Renaissance. The Mamluks ruled one of the great empires of the Middle Ages, located in Egypt and Syria, and also, from time to time, most of the territory of the Middle East. The author reveals the unique political system of the Mamluks, under which the ruling elite consisted of the elite of white slaves. At the zenith of their power, the Mamluks became the only force capable of giving serious resistance to the Mongols and inflicting a series of defeats on them. In addition, they took active steps to eliminate the remnants of the influence of the Crusaders in the Middle East.
