Until recently, the question of the participation of Jews in the revolutionary events of the XIX century. in the Russian Empire was practically not studied by professional historians either in Russia or in the West. The fundamental research of the Canadian historian Erich Haberer "Jews and Revolution in Nineteenth Century Russia", first published in 1995, is devoted to this topic. It carefully examines the centenary period of Russian-Jewish revolutionary history, examines the causes and characteristics of Jewish participation in the Russian revolutionary events that took place from 1790 to 1890. The author emphasizes the motivation of Jews and the actions of Russian-Jewish activists. His conclusions completely change the traditional approach to historiography, according to which the role of Jews who joined the Russian revolutionary circles was minimized, especially during the period of revolutionary populism in the 1870-1880 period.
Based on the documents of the police, Haberer determined what percentage of persons involved in the inquiry for political reasons were members of the Jewish faith. It turned out that in 1871-1873. Jews accounted for less than 5% of the Narodniks (which corresponded to their proportion in the population of the Russian Empire), in 1874-1876. -7%, in the years 1878-1879. - 9%, in the early 80s - 14%. In the years 1886-1889. Jews accounted for 35-40% of all participants in the revolutionary movement, having become the "critical mass" of the Russian revolutionary movement, as the historian put it. In the conditions of defeat and crisis of the revolutionary movement of the 80s, the influx of Jewish youth allowed to preserve revolutionary continuity.
