Coulter, Peter - When I'm Bored I Make Soup
New Zealander Peter Coulter is not a professional cook. But he does cook,
and writes in an entertaining yet common sense style. His When I'm Bored
I Make Soup reflects these attributes and reminds me of "old style" family
cooking learned from your mother, grandmother, aunt, etc. You know the
ingredients, have general (yet in their own way very specific) instructions,
but measurements are by sight or feel, portions aren't exact; you watch,
you approximate, you learn by trial and error (I still can't make mother's
poppy seed rolls or stuffed cabbage).
Coulter gives instructions for a variety of soups and some breads. Some are
very enticing: Red Pepper Soup with a Cucumber Salsa, Tomato and Black Olive
Soup, Potato and Parsley Soup with Black Peppered Bread. There's not a lot
of "recipes," but there is a lot of encouragement and inspiration.
As Coulter says, "Remember - have fun, after all it's only a bowl of soup."
