The Byzantine Empire began to flourish in the fifth century AD, yet less about it is known
than that of the Western Roman Empire. By showing it's chronological development from the
rule of Constaminc I, Grant delves into the nature of the Byzantine Empire in the fifth
century. The text style is somewhat chatty, as though Grant were lecturing, and contains
lengthy quotations from other sources. However, the very creation of this cohesiveness
gives the book importance. Readers, and especially students, will find his "Lists" and
bibliography helpful.
