Altair Material Modeler 2022.0 Release Notes
The Altair Material Modeler supports the CAE analyst in material parameter identification based on material test results. It reads the raw data from tensile, compression and/or shear tests and displays these curves. The graphical user interface guides the user through all the processes required to prepare the data. The tool offers a straight workflow to prepare the raw data and guides the user through the process to a final and well-designed material useable in FE applications. The Material Modeler is an OML script and requires Altair Compose version above 2021.2.

Release Notes Preparation of RAW-Data before import into Material Modeler
In case of several test result files, it is recommended to have the raw data structured in the same format (see Fig. 1).

Import Data
The Settings tab defines the default paths to working directories. In the first step, the user must select the working folder, containing the raw data files (Fig. 2).

× Altair Compose 2022.0 Close
The Material Modeler import supports the following file formats:
- MS-Excel: *.xls, *.xlsx
- Data files: *dat
- Comma separated values: *.csv
- Pure text files: *.txt
The files, containing the raw data, can be individually selected and imported by clicking on the Import button and a file dialog opens to select the importing data (see Fig. 2). There is no limit to the number of selected files. Only one curve is supported per data file.No further data can be imported after the first import was done. After clicking the Import button, another dialog appears in which the data columns have to be defined and the starting row must be set (see Fig. 3).

× Altair Compose 2022.0 Close
The imported files are shown in the list box and the data is plotted in the main graph area.

Data preparation
Only one curve is supported per data file. Each file in the list can be processed individually. Required actions are:
- x axis must be normalized to 1
- Youngs modulus must be defined (manual or automatic)
To normalize the abscissa (x-axis) within a raw data file, select this file, set a scaling value for the x values and hit Normalize to multiply the axis values with this factor. E.g., if the raw data x-values are expressed in per-cent, set in the “x val” field 0.01 and click the Normalize button (Fig. 3) Raw data curves can be also shift horizontally along the x-axis for the case the starting point is not at the origin (zero x-axis). To do so, click Move to shift the curve by the defined value (Fig.3).

× Altair Compose 2022.0 Close
There are two ways to define the Youngs modulus. Hit YM Eval and the tool start to fit the elastic part automatically and a new plot is shown. The fitted value is shown in the field below Youngs Modulus. Use the slider to adjust the Youngs modulus after that it is stored. This has to be done for all imported files. Deselect Automatic and fill in the value than hit YM visualize to show the plot. You can also adjust by the slider. Select All Curves to set this value to all imported files (Fig.4).

× Altair Compose 2022.0 Close
If the data oscillate very strongly, you can smooth it by clicking the Smoothen button. You can also generate a mean curve if the outcome from testing scatter. Use the Add Mean button and select the base curves for the averaged curve. Select or deselect if you consider Rp0.2 or not (useful for metals). Some materials are characterized by their softening behavior after they have solidified. In this case it is necessary to determine the necking point manually. Choose Select Necking Point and define the point for each selected curve individually (see Fig.5)

× Altair Compose 2022.0 Close
To finish the preparation, click Workup. Select all files that should be processed. The plasticizing part is now determined. This means that the curve is reduced by the elastic part and cut off from the necking point. Then everything is converted to true tension / true plastic strain.
Implemented feature:
- Curve fitting
- Extrapolation
- Adding strain rate dependent curves
- Selection of reduction of the number of data points
- Selection of output unit system
- Adding comments to exported material card
- Selection and export to a CAE solver/product
