Description: The instrument's engine might not be new, but don't be deceived by that. Sophistry offers a superb sound for pads and ambient from Particular Sound (5+ GB, 700+ presets). The enhancements made to the sound and interface of this hybrid synthesizer/sampler are undoubtedly commendable, but we felt the outdated presets sounded weak. Fortunately, Sophistry comes with an extensive library of brand-new presets (actually 700 of them), equivalent to 5 GB of content. Of course, such large numbers are meaningless if the sounds are subpar, so let's take a look at this purple-faced beast and find out what noise it makes.
Big, Bold Sounds - Sophistry's presets are divided into 26 categories. Although that's quite a lot, it's worth noting that most of them are pads, ambients, and synthesizers. The four ambient categories (including the oddly named "Human Dreams" set) are flooded with whistles, waves, sweeps, and sonic swirls. There's a lot of Global Communication-style content for these atmospheric moments, and the sounds are big, bold, and easily comparable to what you might expect to hear on a hardware workstation. Thanks to the use of long samples, patches have a lot of movement and detail, and they can easily add size and atmosphere to any track.
Pads - are divided into ten categories and range from relatively modest synthetic media to massive, raspy soundscapes. The breadth and quality here are outstanding - this might be the best collection of ready-made pads for virtual instruments we've ever encountered. The sound is sample-based, but you can still make quite a few adjustments and adaptations to suit your specific needs, and the CronoX 3 engine is a genuinely powerful beast with excellent filters, effects, and modulation options.
Other categories cover various synthesizer styles (bass, brass, dance, and digital emotive sounds), strings, arpeggiators, sound effects, and leads. The quality is consistently high, and if you want to program sounds from scratch using the included samples, you should start with the two banks of basic waveforms.
