H.E. Bates - The Darling Buds of May The Larkins
1. The Darling Buds of May
Read by Stephen Jack
The sultriness of a summer's afternoon; the sharp tang of autumn;
the frosted reeds at winter time; the sweetness of the wildflowers
in spring - all the glories of the English year are captured in this
selection from the work of H. E. Bates. A lighthearted tale about Pop
and Ma Larkins and their six children; they eat well, drink well, and,
as Pop says, 'everything's perfick'.
2. A Breath of French Air
Read by Raymond Anderson
The indestructible Larkins are off to France with Baby Oscar the Rolls
and Ma's unmarried passport and, with Pop at the wheel, there won't be
much French without gin to match and no French without tears of laughter.
3. When the green woods laugh
Read by Raymond Anderson
The full Larkin orchestra is back on the rural fiddle in Kent and - with
Angela Snow around - the Brigadier may be too old to ride but he is young
enough to fall! Pop is as sexy, genial, generous and boozy as ever and Ma
is a worthy match for him in all these qualities.
4. Oh! To be in England
Read by Raymond Anderson
To be in England seems a good idea with Pop clinching a deal for two suits
of armour, a butter churn, three regency chamber pots - with pink roses -
and a load of other junk; with all the younger Larkins being taken to the
bosom of the Church at a mass baptism - with marquee and private fair-
ground - and above all, with the Reverend Candy locking a half-Nelson on
an unwelcome visitor.
5. A little of what you fancy
Read by Stephen Jack
Pop Larkin has been overdoing it, and struggles back to health and full
enjoyment of life.
