Numerous motivations fueled the Crusades. One side effect was persecution of
non-Christians throughout Europe and intense efforts to convert them. Einbinder
studies the "evolution of a long-neglected corpus of Hebrew poetry" in eleventh-
through-thirteenth-century Europe, particularly France, that commemorated victims
(suicide and otherwise) of this persecution. She details an aspect of Medieval
history not well known.
