referred to by one name, not a publisher obsessed with branding Cross with this crassness,
I started I Predict a Riot in combative mood Fortunately, Bateman.s loss of a first name
has not been accompanied by a loss of his superb comic talent, although it seems to have
persuaded him to write at greater length than necessary Shorter would have been better

He delivers an extraordinary mix of plots and characters begging to be described as
colourful, zany, absurd and surreal Comparisons with Carl Hiaasen are not inappropriate
The book succeeds and manages to be very amusing most of the time because Bateman remains .
just . in control of his rampant inventiveness

The cast of Belfast dysfunctionals includes Superintendent .Marsh. Mallow, forever thwarted
in his attempt to bring to justice the local politician and gangster boss Pink Harrison, who
employs a dodgy accountant whose wife Margaret falls into a coma after eating a carrot cake;
her best friend Maeve, married to a former IRA terrorist, erroneously thought to have died
in a Colombian jail, who falls for the cake.s cook while Margaret is in love with fat Walter,
who gets involved with an estate agent who has recently been stood up by Mallow on a date
arranged over the internet Except that it.s not as simple as that
