This volume profiles 150 mathematicians from around the globe, only six
of whom are women.
McElroy's focus is on historical figures who lived before 1900, whose work
has stood the test of time. Each entry has basic biographical information
when known and a description of the subject's accomplishments. The language
flows easily, almost conversationally. The author states in his introduction
that he has written the book with general readers in mind. Each entry concludes
with a list of further resources. However, some of the bibliographic references
would be difficult to find for students who do not have access to academic
libraries and databases. Average-quality, black-and-white illustrations appear
throughout. Helpful resources include lists of people by field, country of birth,
country of major scientific activity, and year of birth, and a chronology. A final
bibliography lists all of the books and journal articles mentioned in each entry
and Internet sources.
