The FBI said J. Robert Oppenheimer had "Communist" written all over him.
But Hoover and his gang didn't discover it until well after Oppenheimer
became a government servant and fathered the potent U.S. nuclear weapons
program. Suspicion grew after WWII when he began opposing atomic technology
development. If he were a Soviet spy, Hoover reasoned, Oppenheimer had
gathered data for the enemy and then tried to ensure the U.S. would lose
the upper hand.
