Cataract Treatment is exclusively surgical. Intervention is one of the most commonly practiced (in Romania are approximately 40,000 annual operations). For cataract surgery under the microscope is realized an operator and consists in removing the lens become opaque lens and replacing it with a synthetic (artificial lens).
Before the intervention (surgery), a consultation of a physician anesthesiologist allows the surgeon according to eye, choosing the most appropriate type of anesthesia. An eye examination is necessary to calculate ecobiometric implant power. Preoperative treatment is prescribed by an ophthalmologist a few days before surgery.
Anesthesia is most frequently local injection around the eye or instillation of an eyewash. General anesthesia is rarely indicated (eg in children).
Most commonly used surgical technique called phacoemulsification, consists of a small incision in front of the eye lens fragmentation and aspiration using a probe with ultrasound. Capsule that surrounds the lens is kept in place. In some cases, lens extraction is done without ultrasound (Extracapsular extraction). The implant is then inserted (put) in place of natural lens behind the pupil. The incision requires no stitches required. The surgery usually lasts less than 30 min.
In some forms of cataract or if incidents occur peroperatorii, carrying out surgery could be modified. There are few situations (due to intraoperative complications) it is necessary to place an artificial lens in front of the pupil (in the anterior chamber).
