The MicroStation product team is happy to announce the latest version of industry-standard modeling software application, Bentley AECOsim Building Designer V8i (SELECTseries 4) 08.11.09.593.
This single information modeling software application includes tools for architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical systems design, construction documentation, and visualization of any type and scale of building.
New capabilities in AECOsim Building Designer V8i (SELECTseries 4) 08.11.09.593 includes:
Building Designer:
- Citrix Ready Verification - AECOsim Building Designer V8i has achieved Citrix Ready Verification and is fully supported when operating with Citrix XenApp 5.0 64–bit on Windows Server 2008 and Citrix XenApp 6.0 64–bit on Windows Server 2008 R2. This will provide IT organizations and administrators more control over software deployments in their organizations. Users will benefit from standardized configurations and less disruptive upgrades.
- New "New Project" - AECOsim Building Designer has enhanced the traditional “new project” found in the MicroStation Manager. Now when you select a template project it includes all the files, folders, subfolders and contents of those folders as defined within the project template.
- IFC 2x3 Dataset Extension - AECOsim Building Designer V8i is now delivered with IFC 2x3 Dataset Extension that can be used to complement and extend any of the delivered localized datasets or custom user datasets. The IFC extension contains the required IFC2x3 schemas and properties to export an IFC 2x3 compliant IFC file. It also includes further extensions which append the schema and properties further to accommodate the FM Handover. This all easily extended to any project by adding a couple of configuration variables to your PCF at the start of a project.
- IFC Export – IFC export has been enhanced, allowing for greater control of you IFC exports
- DataGroup/IFC Property Mapping - AECOsim Building Designer V8i has enhanced it IFC export capabilities. It supports mapping AECOsim Building Designer V8i DataGroup properties to IFC properties and/or Types as its first tier of IFC mapping. Part and Family mapping is still supported as a second tier option for those elements that are not assigned DataGroup properties. Included in these IFC Mapping Enhancements is the ability to manage overlapping or duplicate properties between AECOsim Building Designer V8i and IFC, making sure information is not unnecessarily duplicated and the user consistently know which properties need to be populated.
- IFC Spatial Containment - AECOsim Building Designer V8i has improved its methods for determining spatial containment for publishing IFC files, reducing the requirement to compose "purpose-built" models to support IFC output.
- COBie (Construction Operations Building Information Exchange)/FM Handover Support - As part of the IFC Enhancements, AECOsim Building Designer V8i can export a COBie or FM Handover IFC file as well as publish the COBie compliant spreadsheet.
- Dynamic View Sense Distance Enhancements - The sense distance capabilities available within Dynamic views correlates to the sense distance capabilities available in the Drawing Extraction Manager (DEM)
- Dynamic View Drawing Rule Flyover Information - in a Dynamic View, the rule used to resymbolize and/or annotate an architectural, mechanical or structural element is published with the flyover text. This clearly communicates which drawing rule was applied and which criteria the element meets.
- i-model unit fidelity - i-models published from AECOsim Building Designer V8i will now display a visible unit label, further qualifying the property value and unit of measurement.
- Utilities
- Part XML-Excel Conversion utility is used to convert various dataset files (including DataGroup catalog files, part, compound part, and component files; and settings files) from XML to XLTM (Microsoft Excel Macro-Enabled Template). The data can be bulk-edited in the Microsoft Excel format, and then converted back to XML format.
- IFC Transformation Utility allows users to convert a COBie compliant IFC file into a COBie Spreadsheet.
- DataGroup Upgrade utility allows users to upgrade the schemas and properties on the existing building elements within a DGN to align with the current DataGroup definition. This utility should be run if you have added, removed, or renamed definition files, property groups or properties to your DataGroup schema and you wish to apply these schema changes to existing building elements.
Architectural:
- Compound Wall Cleanup - The Compound Wall Cleanup utility joins ("Cleanup") the individual layers of compound walls based on the wall layer’s defined function (priority) when the walls intersect one another.
- Compound Wall Variable Height - The compound wall variable height feature enables designers to set variable heights (relative to wall height) and offsets (relative to top of the wall or the bottom of wall) for certain compound wall parts while maintaining a fixed height for other parts.
- Wall Annotation –wall/compound walls annotations, with the appropriate symbols and corresponding leader, are now available through Architectural auto-annotation rules or place manually with the DataGroup annotation tool.
Structural:
- A new Column Grid tool is available within AECOsim Building Designer V8i. This tool extends your capabilities for creating, modifying and managing column grids. Numerous orthogonal and radial grids can be defined, combined and assigned to floors. These column grids are fully interchangeable and can be imported and/or exported to and from ISM and RAM Structural Systems. These grids are integrated with the Structural Documentation Center and Dynamic Views.

- A new Joist tool is available within AECOsim Building Designer V8ito create and modify joists fully interchangeable with ISM or RAM Structural Systems
- A new Steel Deck tool is available within AECOsim Building Designer V8i to create and modify steel decks or composite decks fully interchangeable with ISM or RAM Structural Systems
- Wind Bracing Symbols - A new type of automated Structural Drawing annotation is introduced in this edition of AECOsim Building Designer V8i. Wind Bracing Symbols are an extension of the Structural Drawing Resymbolization Rule graphic symbol functionality which can now be used to annotate vertical bracing in Structural Framing Plan drawings.
- Structural Quantities - A new DataGroup schema is added to AECOsim Building Designer V8i that extends the available Structural Linear Member DataGroup properties to include properties used to report on Structural Quantities.
- AECOsim Building Designer V8i´s CIS/2 translator is enhanced to create Managed Data Items. Managed Data Items are used for change management and design synchronization when working with detailing applications dependent upon CIS/2 models.
Mechanical:
- The addition of approximately 175 new components added for HVAC, Fire Protection, Plumbing, Low Pressure Gas and Drainage Disciplines (Please consult the readme and Help documentation for a complete list)
