In view of several million organic compounds being characterized, it cannot be disputed that the Dalton opinion is valid for the majority of all compounds;but
it is hardly the majority of all inorganic compounds. For reasons to become evident below, it is very difficult to count the inorganic compounds in Gmelin the same way as it is done in Beilstein, and their number may not be defined within a factor 2. The same difficulty occurs to a stronger extent in minerals.
