In text written at a level appropriate for high-school students or undergraduates, it chronicles 208 men and women scientists and inventors, both recent and historical, whose scientific or technological achievements have had a major impact on society.

Entries are about 1,000 words each and list nationalities, dates, and discipline and describe the experiences and contribution of the featured scientists and inventors. Some, but not all, entries contain photographs or portraits of the notable person. Cross-references are indicated in small capitals. Entries do not have bibliographies for further reading.
