Gene therapy has rapidly become a new frontier in pharmacology and experimental therapeutics. An explosion of interest in the identity, structure and function of genes, the mapping of the human genome, and the realization of the genetic basis of many diseases has been the genesis of a new paradigm in medical research-that of genetic medicine.
Inevitably, studies of the genetic bases of disease and the application of gene therapy to disease processes will lead to new discoveries for disease control. The evolution of gene therapy includes not only identification of genes and gene products, but also of mechanisms for delivery and for regulation of gene expression.
