Swift is a multi-paradigm programming language developed by Apple for use with iOS and OS X. Designed to replace Objective C, work began on Swift in 2010 and the first mobile app was debuted in June 2014 at the Worldwide Developers Conference. Despite its goal of replacing Objective C, Swift is capable of working flawlessly alongside the more dated Objective C language while using the Cocoa and Cocoa Touch frameworks.
Swift is built with the LLVM compiler included in Xcode 6 beta, and uses the Objective-C runtime, allowing Objective-C, Objective-C++ and Swift code to run within a single program. During it’s debut, Swift was described as “Objective C without the C” by Apples VP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi.
Available for download now as a beta version, developers can start tinkering now: https://developer.apple.com/
Tiobe Managing Director Paul Janssen expands on Swift: "Objective-C is a small abstraction layer on top of C." He adds, "Swift is a modern programming language that has adopted all the goodies of other popular languages such as automated memory management, script-like syntax and type inference." But with Swift, “Apple is trying to catch up with Java and C.”
There are very few online resources for the new programming language, and I am proud to announce that this is the VERY FIRST online programming course available for Swift. While this is the earliest course, I will be adding additional content as it becomes available to ensure that any developer who signs up for the course will have the most updated content. By enrolling in the course, all current and future lectures will be yours and will never expire.
During the lectures I will walk you through setting up Swift locally, the basics of the language and how it compares to other common languages (including Objective C), and get you started on some new projects.
I encourage participation with content and with fellow students, and always enjoy reading feedback in the comments. If you would like to request additional lectures be included in the course, just ask ☺
By signing up for this course you will be months ahead of other developers attempting to use the new Swift programming language that are forced to navigate Apple's 500-page instructional document.
