Spark is a sci-fi thriller that's creative in many places but also has a familiar trope. The story takes place in a near futuristic world where robots with human-like reactive intelligence have started replacing humans, and security systems with artificial intelligence capabilities watch over everyone in order to prevent terroristic acts similar to those precipitated globally during the infamous "Day of Rage."
The novel's protagonist, Jacob, used to be a top-rated designer in a highly successful robotics company until a brain injury sustained from a motorcycle accident changed him drastically and made him lose interest in his job. Four years after the accident, Jacob is almost fully recovered except for some autistic-like emotional incapacities, which his new employer has apparently been able to exploit to their advantage after discovering and hiring him on as an assassin.
What ensues next is the story of how Jacob eventually gains back awareness of his world and what the triggers turn out to be. Creative plotlines interwoven with philosophical discussions of the nature of the "man vs machine" problem help propel the story forward and make the novel an interesting read.
