This is a truly engaging read about the long-ago disappearance of a high school graduate, his best friend, and a variety of other residents of a small town in Ohio. Jason Danvers, has always believed that his friend, Logan Shaw, had made good on his frequent declarations that he was going to leave their home town, despite the fact that his father was a wealthy, prominent citizen, and Logan would have a life of relative ease if he stayed. Year after their graduation, Jason's sister Hayden arrives at his door with her teenage daughter, asking Jason to let the girl stay with him while she resolves some long-standing issues as part of her 12-step program for alcohol abuse. When Hayden doesn't return after a few days, Jason is drawn into a search for her that is connected to Logan's disappearance.
David J. Bell has written a taut story, with characters that are likeable; I found myself truly caring about Jason, his wife, Hayden, and her daughter, and rooting for them to come out of their situation unscathed. The pacing is good, and most of the story is believable. A few characters are almost caricatures, but their overall effect does not really diminish the story.
