'Upadesa-Sutram' (Upadesha-Sutras) [aphorisms with "commentaries and explanations"], commonly referred to as the Jaimini Sutras. The treatise originally consisted of eight adhyayas [parts], four pads [chapters] each. And, as the name implies, the Upadesha Sutras were meant to interpret classical texts, such as Brihat-Parasara-Khora-Shastra and other treatises. Sri Jaimini was a disciple of Sri Vyasa, the son of Parasara. Thus, Jaymini was trained by Jyotish in the tradition of the school of the author of Brihat-Parasara-Khora-Shastra and compiled these Upadesha-sutras (Upadesha-Sutras) in order to make more clear and comment on some of Jyotish's methods [Vedic astrology]. In the treatise he touched many areas of Jyotish, such as the Chara- and Sthira-Karaki [temporal and permanent significators] and others, which are briefly mentioned in the classical texts, but they are explained in great detail. In addition, Jaimini described the seventy Phalita-Dash [periods]. Jaimini suggests referring to classical texts (of his time) for explaining the methods of constructing and using varg [fractional maps], describing only those who do not find sufficient explanations from his point of view in the works written before him (Saptamsa, Rudramsha, Shashtyamsha and other vargis) .
