This edition of "Costume in Russia XVIII - early XX century" is entirely based on the materials of the richest collection of costume, stored in the funds of the Department of the History of Russian Culture of the State Hermitage. Includes very beautiful photographs and reproductions, their description, as well as a list of companies and brands that produced the dress at that time.
The volume of the album does not allow us to disclose the fullness and complexity of the evolution of the costume in Russia. This edition is limited to the disclosure of the theme "City suit in Russia XVIII - early XX century", not stopping at the history of the Russian folk costume, and also does not address the issue of the formation and development in Russia of official and military uniforms. In the album on the highly artistic samples of the Hermitage collection the evolution of the forms of city costume in Russia, its interaction with changes in the general direction of art, with the change of styles are traced.
About the collection, stored in funds (taken from the author):
This interesting collection began to take shape in the first years after the Great October Socialist Revolution, when in 1918 a significant number of costumes from the nationalized palaces and mansions of Petrograd and the suburbs entered the historical and domestic department of the Russian Museum. These were the ceremonial, ballroom, visiting and everyday toilets belonging to several generations of the Russian aristocracy, created by the hands of skilled Russian and foreign tailors, embroiderers, lace-makers. After a series of displacements in the spring of 1941, the collection became part of the newly created Department of the History of Russian Culture of the State Hermitage.
The Hermitage was also given a unique complex of men's costume of the first quarter of the 18th century, known as the "Wardrobe of Peter I", numbering about three hundred pieces of clothing belonging to Peter I. Among them are the costumes - wonderful examples of applied art of their time and a modest everyday dress, which Were born townspeople.
In addition, the Hermitage has a small but interesting collection of merchant, philistine and folk clothes, festive and everyday, which included materials from the collections of NL. Shabelskoy, I.A. Galnbek and others, as well as exhibits purchased by the expeditions of the Department of the History of Russian Culture of the Hermitage in various regions of the country.
The suit collection also includes a military wardrobe, which was previously stored in the Arsenal of the Winter Palace, consisting of samples of the general and officer uniforms of various Russian arms of the 18th and early 20th centuries, and a soldier's uniform obtained from the battle class of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.
The collection is being replenished in our days. Through the expert procurement commission of the Hermitage, private individuals acquire not only individual suits and supplements to them, but also entire complexes. One of the last significant receipts is the collection of V.V. Karahan. In its composition more than forty dresses of the first quarter of the XX century, most of which have the brands of firms in Paris and Moscow.
Currently, the Hermitage collection has several thousand exhibits and is one of the richest not only in the Soviet Union, but also among foreign ones.
