The biography of Xuan Zang (603-64), compiled by his disciple Hui Li, tells about the origins and young years of this outstanding figure of Chinese Buddhism, his journey to India and the last period of his life when he was mainly engaged in translating the Chinese extracted to them during wanderings of Buddhist manuscripts. Most of the book is a description of the journey, containing some information about India, absent in the work of Xuan Zang himself, a number of living details, including personal order, apparently drawn from traveler's notes, and his stories recorded by students, and, probably, and records of someone from accompanying him when returning to China satellites. The life directly adjoins the content to Si-Yu-Ki or "Travel records for Western countries", this is one of the compulsory basic books for scholars interested in the history of ancient and early medieval India in general and Buddhism in particular.
Thus, the text is a biographical sketch and explains the details relating to the events from the life of the great Buddhist scholars, and in more detail the pilgrim-traveler. The life story is divided into five sections and tells the story of Xuan Zang's life, from his birth until his death in 664. The language of life is marked by a reverential attitude towards the personality of the teacher, which gives the composition a special, refined literary style. The writing of Hui Li is a rich source of information on China, India and those remote parts of Central Asia that the great pilgrim crossed on his way to India.
The translation of Samuel Bil was made with a Chinese original, including an analysis of difficult places in comparison with the writing of I Ching, who, following Xuan Zang, traveled along his route in India. In addition to the introduction by L. Cranmer-Bing, this edition also contains a detailed introduction of an interpreter, which discusses various points of contention, including those that are relevant to the identification of names and places.
