Ravenna was one of the most important cities in Europe in the late-antique period. Between 400 and 751 the city was the center of political, economic and cultural life of the Western Roman Empire, in which successively there were residences of emperors, Ostrogothic kings, Byzantine governors in Italy. During this 350-year period, the city has steadily increased and replenished with remarkable works of art and architecture, many of which have survived to this day. Accordingly, Ravenna and its monuments are of particular importance for understanding the history and culture of late antiquity.
