The book offered to the attention of the reader is a selective publication of reports that the Belgian envoy to Japan (1894-1910) Baron Albert d'Anette (years of life - 1849-1910) sent to his minister in Brussels. The lengthy stay of the author of these letters in office (he died in the Doyen of the diplomatic corps in Tokyo) coincided with the aggravation of the struggle of the great powers in the Far East and the acceleration of the political and economic development of the region, manifestations of which were the Sino-Japanese and Russian-Japanese wars, the Japanese annexation of Korea, boxing an uprising in China, a boom in railway construction, and so on.
Being, on the one hand, a mostly neutral observer, because of Belgium's lack of strategic interests in the Far East, and on the other hand, a great connoisseur of Japanese life and politics, the baron gave very objective and qualified assessments to the events and people whose contemporary and interlocutor he happened to become .
Half a century after the death of the diplomat, the American researcher of Russian-Soviet-Japanese relations, George Alexander Lenzen (1923-1979) translated the most interesting, in his opinion, from the dispatcher's reports to English and equipped them with extensive commentaries.
