Three books dealing with Roman Law:

Bauman, Richard - Crime and Punishment in Ancient Rome
Richard A. Bauman traces the changes in Roman attitudes, laws and practices from the Roman
Republic to the late Empire. Trials for treason, sedition and corruption illuminate political
history; common law crimes like murder, and forgery that sharpen our perception of social
history; discussions of freedom of speech increase our understanding of intellectual history;
and religious persecutions fill out the picture of religious history. In essence, Bauman
explains the theory and practice of punishment in ancient Rome and, thus, much of Western
law today.

Grubbs, Judith Evans - Women and the Law in the Roman Empire~A Sourcebook on Marriage, Divorce
and Widowhood
This sourcebook presents a wealth of legal material from Imperial Rome through the end of the
western Roman Empire in 476 to explain a woman's legal status in Roman culture. It examines
what rights women held under Roman law, the restrictions to which they were subject, and legal
regulations on marriage, divorce and widowhood. Major legal texts, such as the Theodosian Code,
are included as well as numerous non-legal documentary sources. These help distinguish between
how the law worked in practice and how practice, especially in Roman provinces, often differed
from the letter of the law.

Tellegen-Couper, Olga - A Short History of Roman Law
Olga Tellegen-Couperus presents a brief, accurate and up-to-date survey of the development of
Roman law. She divides the history of Roman law into four periods, each based on political
developments. For each period, she gives 1) a general outline of the sources, 2) a description
of the territory under Roman rule, 3) the socio-economic situation and political developments,
and 4) analyzes the evolution of law.
