This book starts with the celebration of a wedding. The companions believe they have slain the evil Dragon
Highlord Verminaard. They have rescued the refugees from Pax Tharkas and taken them to a valley in the
Kharolis mountains. After they are attacked by the Dragon Armies, Tanis and Flint are sent to search for
the long lost dwarven kingdom of Thorbardin, hoping to persuade the dwarves to give the refugees shelter for
winter. Each of the other companions face their own trials. Raistlin remembers that, according to tales of
old, the key to Thorbardin lies in the haunted fortress known as Skullcap. The others want nothing to do
with this accursed place, but Raistlin feels strangely drawn to the ruins, and he persuades a reluctant
Caramon to accompany him there. Sturm becomes obsessed with finding the legendary Hammer of Kharas, and his
obsession nearly plunges the party into disaster. Riverwind, now chieftain of his tribe, is made the reluctant
leader of the refugees and worries that he is not suited for the task. Tika Waylan must decide if she has the
courage to undertake a perilous journey to save those she loves from certain death, while Tanis Half-Elven
wrestles with his faith in the newly returned gods. But it is the dwarf, Flint Fireforge, who faces the most
crucial test.

Kitiara discovers that a former lover, Tanis Half-elven, and his friends were responsible for the death of
Highlord Verminaard. This revelation puts Kit in danger, for Emperor Ariakas hears of the connection and
suspects Kit of having arranged the assassination. He orders his witch, the exotic Iolanthe, to spy on Kit,
who clinches her own doom by becoming obsessed with finding Tanis, convincing Ariakas that she is indeed
a traitor. But Kit is not one to take a sentence of death easily. Kit's rival, Laurana, begins her own journey
to destiny, as she travels to Icereach with Sturm, Flint, Tasslehoff, and three Solamnic knights led by Sir
Derek Crownguard. The knights are on a quest for the fabled dragon orb that will be the salvation of Solamnia.
What none of them know is that they are all being led into a deadly trap laid for them by the winternorn, the
dark elf wizard Feal-Thas.
But it is Kitiara who faces the greatest challenge. To save herself, she vows to Takhisis that she will spend
the night in Dargaard Keep, the dread castle of the death knight, Lord Soth. As she and Skie fly to challenge
the death knight, Kit is well aware that in three hundred years, not one person who has ever faced Lord Soth
has survived the ordeal.

Raistlin Majere has become a Black Robe wizard and travels to Neraka, the lord city of the Dark Queen,
ostensibly to work for her, though in reality he means to further his own quest for power. But Takhisis
finds out that the dragon orb has entered her city and sends her draconians to find and destroy the wizard
who has it in his possession. Before her agents can strike, though, Raistlin finds out that Takhisis means
to take control of all wizardly magic. She has ordered Kitiara to set a trap for the Gods of Magic on the
Night of the Eye, when all the high-ranking wizards will be in Neraka to celebrate.
As the forces of light, with help from the good dragons, are turning the tide of battle, Raistlin is forced
to flee, for his foes are closing in on him. As the Dragon Highlords vie for the Crown of Power in the Temple
of the Dark Queen, Raistlin Majere wages his own desperate battle against Takhisis in the dungeons below and
meets again the brother he betrayed. The fate of the world hangs in the balance.
