"A man without memory, tied by blood to a city of robots.
At his side, a mysterious woman whose life and memory he saved,
whose love he has won for a second time. His name is Derec; hers
is Ariel. And their story has only begun to be told..."
Under the rather unwieldy umbrella title of "Isaac Asimov's
Robot City: Robots and Aliens", the adventures of Derec and Ariel
continue in a somewhat more philosophical tone in the six short
books that are an extension of the Robot City story (in fact,
at the end of Book 6 of the first series the reader is invited
to look forward to Book 7, which I guess is Book 1!). There is
still a light-hearted touch in these stories (allusions to
Arthur C. Clarke's HAL are particularly hilarious), but there
is an undercurrent of serious rumination on just what a society
in which robots proliferate might become.
As with the first series, each book begins with a short essay
by Asimov that is somewhat related to the book, except -
inexplicably - Book 5, which begins with a lengthy - and rather
shaky - summary of the entire saga to that point!
I corrected one major error but left the rest alone (as before,
Part 00 in each "audiobook").
The books:
1. Changeling, by Stephen Leigh
2. Renegade, by Cornell Scotten
3. Intruder, by Robert Thurston
4. Alliance, by Jerry Oltion
5. Maverick, by Bruce Bethke
6. Humanity, by Jerry Oltion
In dealing with the question of "what is a human being"
the stories lay some groundwork for the Robot Mystery series,
the eventual fate of the Spacers--and the robots themselves--
and, of course, the actions of R. Daneel Olivaw and R. Giskard
Reventlov.
For the few people who have asked about it, I have also
included a text document detailing the preparation of these
audio versions from text files along with some of the tips
I have accumulated during the process.
Next: Approximately eight years later, Derec and Ariel return
in the first novel of the Tiedemann/Irvine "Robot Mystery"
series: Mirage
