Two days after breaking an ankle, steeplechase jockey Derek Franklin is informed
that his older brother Greville has been critically injured in an accident. When
Greville dies without ever regaining consciousness, Derek finds that he must
(temporarily) take over his semiprecious stone importing business. Derek soon
finds that among the facets of his late brother's life are a couple of race horses,
a mistress and a habit of keeping as much as possible secret. Oh, and about
a million and a half dollars of missing diamonds! Classic Francis. There's the
immersion into another profession, there's a logical mystery, there's some racing
thrown in and there's even a bit of reflective melancholy as Derek grieves for
the brother that he never really knew. The only weak point could've been with
Greville's fascination for electronic gadgets such as the forerunner of today's PDAs;
Francis sometimes becomes over-enthusiastic over items that should be background
filler. However, in this case the fascination with gadgets doesn't seem forced but
actually advances the story line.
