cmiVFX has released a SideFX Houdini Cloth Masterclass in which Shivani Sondhi explores the Houdini Cloth Context in depth. While employing a beginner's approach, she begins the lesson with a comprehensive introduction to the features and tools available. This is a long detailed chapter that will get the viewer "up to speed" quickly. With the basics of cloth complete, Shivani dives deeper with intermediate to advanced subjects such as custom attributes, multisolvers and finally the sopsolver with cloth. This would be an excellent lesson even if she had stopped there... Lee Perry-Smith of Triplegangers kindly provided one of his excellent 3D characters, The Assassin. So naturally we just had to continue the lesson with a costume. Further, Mixamo Animation provided their excellent Animation services. Good animation is a crucial step to a good cloth simulation. Shivani continues the course by using all of the basics taught in chapter one to create a Roman Soldier Costume for the Assassin character. This is a massive lesson that is tightly packed. The viewer will have a very clear knowledge set after this lesson on how the Houdini Cloth Pipeline works.

Cloth Basics
In this long chapter we will cover all of the basics of the SideFX Houdini Cloth context. Included are: Model units, creating cloth objects, hard and soft constraints, stretch versus shear, weak strong bend forces, look simulation recipes for silk, canvas and leather, dealing with collision objects, jitter fix, external forces, tearing, cloth thickness, cloth friction, multisolver and sopsolvers with cloth in dops.
Skirt Custom Stiffness
In this section we will model a skirt as a beginning to a more detailed female Roman Warrior character project. After a basic simulation, we will add custom attributes to create physically appropriate behavior in the garment.
Bustier Top
Next we will model a bustier style top and discuss simulation options. The topic of adding UVs to a Houdini cloth object will also be addressed.
Adding Props to Your Simulation
In this section we will look at a method of how to add props and other physical embellishments to your clothing simulation. Approaches to adding colliders to layered simulations will be covered.
The Cloth Proxy Tool
ext we will learn how to utilize the cloth proxy tool. Both the shelf tool and manual set-up will be covered, including how to transfer cloth simulation attributes to pre-simulated geometry sequences.
Adding The Finishing Touches
Lastly we will tie together all of the concepts in order to add the finishing touches to our costume. A sash and cape will be added using various constraints and simulating in layers will be discussed.
